Theodore Roosevelt and Loss

Theodore Roosevelt is known as a bombastic president and youthful rough rider.  But did you know that he was shaped by two great losses?  His first wife died giving birth on February 14, 1884 at the age of 22.  Same day, Valentine’s Day, his mother died both in  the family home.  Tragedy indeed.

Theodore coped by escaping to North Dakota becoming and outdoorsman.  He never mentioned his first wife and sent their baby to be raised by his sister.

Its best not to judge another’s grieving process.  Many facts are unknown.

Theodore did emerge, remarry and take custody of his young daughter at age three. While we may not see specific imprints on his presidency, he is remembered as a president of great courage.  His losses, no doubt, contributed to his strength.
