Preparing for a New Year

New Year’s Eve is almost here.  Regardless of our plans, large celebration, small, or none, we can’t avoid that related word:  resolutions.
Frankly, I don’t make those lists anymore.  They are discouraging measuring sticks, usually impacted by what I think others expect of me or would approve.
I choose instead to think, ‘What went right this past year?’  What actions were satisfying?  How can I build on that?  We are all more likely to pursue those good goals where we already made a small beginning.  Progress is a good thing.
Colossians 1 reminds us that growing in knowledge of God, endurance, bearing fruit in good works, patience and gratitude are good places to start.  And most important, joyfully give thanks in everything. Not resolutions, simply resolve.
