Peter Piot

Peter Piot identified the deadly virus, Ebola, in 1976.  He traveled to the Yambuku, Congo, a young microbiologist on a mission to investigate a virus.  A nun had died of the disease that was rampant  with a 90% mortality rate.  Her blood had been sent to him in a thermos.  His team traveled to the village no one wanted to enter.  Pilots of the plane delivering them refused to even cut their engines when they landed, wanting to get back in the air escaping the village of death.

When Peter approached the compound the sisters told him, “Stay outside the barrier or you will die!”  I jumped over saying, “We are here to help.”

While his incredibly valuable research and discovery did not ultimately save the village.  He did what he knew he needed to do.
