Feeling Good
‘I feel good.‘ Upbeat songs and friendly responses to questions remind us that we all prefer to ‘feel good.‘ I’ve been studying King Saul in I Samuel. He liked feeling good too. But his life was increasingly and sadly off track. Starting as a humble man who hid when he was to be appointed king, he became proud, impatient, and self promoting. He preferred looking good before people over being good before God.
When tormented thoughts came, his servants recommended Davids music to make him ‘feel good.‘ Indeed it worked. I Samuel 16: 28. Saul would be relieved and ‘feel better.‘ Problem was, Saul did not change. Jealousy and self promotion marked his life until death. The solution to Saul’s tormented thinking was obedience. A lesson we all would do well to remember.
