December’s challenges
This month’s celebration of Christmas is the most celebrated holiday in the United States. Those who aren’t Christ followers often decorate, celebrate and give gifts. The season challenges me to commit again to what is important to each of us, not just the expected celebration extravaganza.
Yes, I’ll have my neighbors in for our cookie swap and they’ll see my manger scene on my fireside hearth. We can each consider how we can be true to our faith, and consistent in our loving outreach. That is becoming more difficult in our times.
Which traditions are truly meaningful, and what has become habit? Churches should do the same. Is the celebration worthy of the expense? What would Jesus do with those resources? December is a good time to examine, and focus on why Jesus came.
